An Orsat gas analyser or Orsat apparatus is a piece of laboratory equipment used to analyse a gas sample for its oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide An Orsat gas analyser or Orsat apparatus is a piece of laboratory equipment used to analyse a gas sample for its oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide .

What is the purpose of Orsat?
An Orsat gas analyser or Orsat apparatus is a piece of laboratory equipment used to analyse a gas sample (typically fossil fuel flue gas) for its oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide content.

Orsat analysis
If a portable gas Chromatograph is not available, a gas sampling bottle can be filled with the dried gas after rotometer m. Analysis of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and illuminants concentrations in the gas can be determined on an Orsat equipped with combustion apparatus to determine hydrogen and methane. However, the analysis time is lengthy so that the number of analyses made near the end of the coking cycle are too limited to obtain a true picture of the coking cycle end point.
Analysis of Flue and Fuel Gases
Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide
The apparatus normally used for the routine analysis of flue gas is the Orsat appparatus. The gases usually estimated are carbon dioxide, oxygen and carbon monoxide.
The apparatus is illustrated in Fig. 122.1. It consists essentially of a water-jacketed gas burette, connected by a common line of coarse capillary tube and tapped connections to three absorption pipettes, containing, respectively, solutions of potassium hydroxide, alkaline pyrogallol and ammoniacal cuprous chloride.

A levelling bottle is connected to the base of the gas burette to enable readings to be taken at constant pressure and for use in transferring gas to and from the absorption pipettes.
Heater Stack
• Damper, mechanical or pneumatically operated to control the draft through the stack.
• Draft gauge (pressure gauge and pressure indicator).
• Flue temperature (temperature indicator).
• Orsat (O2 CO CO2 analyzer).
An instrument draft gauge, flue temperature, and Orsat are used to access the correct combustion conditions. Steam is supplied for the Orsat connection in the stack. Water is supplied to the O2 analyzer. A platform for the access to the stack instruments is supplied with the heater.
