Lab Specific Gravity Bottle Pycnometer For Determining Liquid Density Labs

- 1.The capacity of the specific gravity bottle is 250 mL
- 2.Made of borosilicate 3.3 glass, it has strong chemical resistance and high fracture resistance capability
- 3.It has a big stopper and a flat bottom for liquid spill prevention
- 4.It is suitable for measuring the liquid density in industrial, laboratory, school, agricultural grain and other units, and analyzing the purity, volatile energy or content of the substance
A specific gravity bottle (also called a pycnometer) works by measuring the exact mass of a known 50ml volume of a liquid and comparing it to the mass of an equal volume of water.
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Weigh the empty bottle: Clean and dry the Specific Gravity Bottles thoroughly, then weigh it on an analytical balance to record its empty mass (M₁).
- Weigh with water: Fill the bottle with distilled water until it overflows slightly, insert the capillary stopper so excess liquid squeezes out the top, wipe it dry, and weigh it (M₂). Subtracting empty weight from this gives the exact mass of the water.
- Weigh with the test liquid: Empty, dry, and refill the bottle with your unknown liquid using the exact same capping method, then weigh it (M₃).
How to Calculate Specific Gravity
- Find the mass of the unknown liquid by subtracting the empty bottle mass from the liquid-filled bottle mass.
- Find the mass of an equal volume of water by subtracting the empty bottle mass from the water-filled bottle mass.
- Divide the mass of the unknown liquid by the mass of the water. Because the volumes are identical, this ratio yields the specific gravity without units.
calculate the specific gravity
- The mass of the empty bottle
- The mass of the bottle with water
- The mass of the bottle with your liquid
